Reed Tables and Warping
How is the ReedGeek “Universal” Reed Tool different?

Most  methods of dealing with reed table warping are based on abrasives.  The reed tables are
filed or sanded until “flat”
.   While these methods of flattening can be made to work, they are time
consuming and error prone.  In addition, they also tend to remove material from the reed’s main
vibrating area.  This can have a
 negative impact on reed performance.

The ReedGeek “Universal” Reed Tool is a precision-machined tool made of extremely durable
high-speed tool steel that works in a manner similar to a hand plane.  The tool is machined flat to
far closer  tolerances than can be achieved on reed knives or other cutting tools.

The “Universal” flattens only the intended table area of the reed.  It cuts quickly and precisely so
that the reed can be flattened in a few minutes.

The ReedGeek “Universal” Reed Tool is extremely portable, facilitating use even in demanding
performance situations where other approaches would be impracticable.

The ReedGeek “Universal” Reed Tool can be used by anyone with even modest mechanical skill.
If you can put a reed on a mouthpiece and place and tighten the ligature, you will be able to use the
Universal to flatten reeds.

The tool's hand-ground  blades can be used by advanced reed adjusters to quickly define the reed
rails and corners and to remove precise amounts of material for exact front-to-back and side-to-
side balancing on the top of the reed.
